The history of the Neo - Renaissance villa Winckelmannstr. no. 6
But let's go back to the beginning of the villa's history. It was used as a private residence for a short time, and then in 1898 the two upper floors were converted into a boarding house for young women. Then from 1911 to 1920 the building served the same purpose as it does today – as the pension Minerva ( praised by a contemporary guidebook, which listed the price for a room with breakfast as 1,50 Reichsmarks ). The building's owners and occupants changed a number of times. In 1932 Alfred Kipping, the grandfather of the current owners, bought the building.
Shortly before the end of the war, the family company Kipping KG shifted their production into two floors of the building, where they made baby clothes and cotton diapers. In 1972 the business was expropriated and nationalized as Plant 8/2 of the Mittweida Peoples' Cotton Works Enterprise.
On 1st of October 1990 the company was reprivatized by the Kipping brothers and the association of von Richthofen heirs. Textile production continued ( with a considerably reduced staff ) under the management of Dr. Rainer Kipping, and a beverage store was opened in the cellar ( where the restaurant and breakfast area is now ).
After the resolution both of credit problems and various technical issues, work began in May 1993 to restore the building and convert it into a hotel and restaurant. On March 1994, 110 years after the villa was commissioned , managers Dr. Rainer and Peter Kipping and 180 guests celebrated the opening of the hotel and restaurant under the name hotel Classic.
A few months after the opening of the hotel, the name Classic was legally registered as a trademark for the accommodations and hospitality industry by a company in Cologne , and as the registration applied retroactively, the hotel had to be renamed Hotel Kipping as of February 2001.
